In this on-camera interview with the think tank SKEMA Publika, Monika Piazzesi discusses her keynote lecture at EFA 2025, where she offered an innovative perspective on sustainable finance. Her research shows that the returns on “green” investments act as an implicit carbon tax: the higher a firm’s CO₂ emissions, the higher its cost of capital, creating a strong incentive to decarbonise. She highlights the importance of focusing on sectors that can more easily shift to clean technologies, such as electricity, and encourages future finance professionals to design products that help make the economy more sustainable. Monika Piazzesi is the Joan Kenny Professor of Economics at Stanford University and a Professor (by courtesy) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
